My admiration for Jon Morrow is no secret.
Demian Farnworth once aptly called him “the warrior with a strong voice.” Me? I call him one heck of a writer.
When Jon and Glen Long invited me to write for Boost Blog Traffic late last year, it was a watershed moment for me.
My plan was always to guest blog for BBT, Men With Pens, Copyblogger, and other elite sites, but all that was supposed to happen way, way down the road.
I didn’t believe I was ready.
So, when the invite came along, I had a choice to make…
Kindly ask for a rain check, or go for it?
I Chose the Latter
I said a prayer, took a deep breath, and channeled the child within me who used to play hide-and-go-seek:
“Ready or not, here I come!”
Thankfully, the guest post was a success. So much so, Jon and Glen kindly invited me a second time.
And that post ? somehow, some way ? became the most popular guest post in the history of Boost Blog Traffic.
Was I surprised? Ecstatic? You better believe it. But I was also disappointed…
I didn’t set out to write the most popular guest post in BBT’s history, I set out to write the most popular post in its history!
And that meant beating Jon Morrow himself.
I wrote the best post I could muster. I promoted it. I answered every single comment the awesome BBT readers left me.
But, alas…
…I fell short.
Aiming High, Making New Goals, and Trying to Best Your Mentors
If I’m worth my salt as a teacher or motivator, there will come a day when each and every one of you try to beat me at my own game.
I write an 8,317-word guide? One of you will try to write 8,318 words.
I reach 20,000 followers on Google Plus? One of you will make it your mission to reach 20,001.
I write a guest post for Boost Blog Traffic that receives 336 comments? One of you will do your darnedest to best it.
And here’s the thing…
I want you to try to beat me.
One of the worst things you can do to someone is having low (or no) expectations of them. They will rise, or fall, to whatever expectations you’ve set.
My expectations for each of you are sky high.
Beat me. Beat Jon Morrow. Beat the 68,387 social media shares he received when writing the most popular post in ProBlogger’s history.
Beat the mentors and influential bloggers you admire. Rise up to their level, stare them down, and beat them.
Think you can do it? I know you can do it. In fact, I’ll race you.
