An eccentric billionaire, as eccentric billionaires often do, made a man an offer he couldn’t refuse.
“If you can find someone in the next hour who will pay $100 for the contents of this box,” the eccentric billionaire explained while handing the man said box, “I will give you $1 million.”
Excited and frantic, the man propositioned every single person he could see.
Young people. Old people. Men. Women. People who appeared to enjoy the finer things in life. People who appeared to live in boxes of their own.
As time expired, the man was pleading with a smiling gentleman who ? unbeknownst to him ? didn’t speak English.
Defeated and despondent, the man returned the box to the eccentric billionaire. Worse, he had to witness the eccentric billionaire make the same offer to a woman who was passing by.
“Sure!” the woman exclaimed after hearing the details.
“Can my husband write you a check?”
The Lesson for Bloggers
Sometimes, we make things harder than they need to be.
Do you know your ideal reader/buyer?
Could you pick them out of a crowd? Could you recognize them if you spoke to them?
How old are they? Are they male or female? Do they speak the same language as you?
In our attempts to get our blogs noticed by others, many of us act like a man trying to sell the contents of a mystery box for $100.
We’re indiscriminate. We broadcast our two cents to anyone and everyone. “Any traffic is good traffic,” we tell ourselves.
And yet we wonder why we have such high bounce rates. We wonder why no one is subscribing or leaving us comments. We wonder why no one is buying our mystery boxes.
Find your ideal reader/buyer. Write to and promote to them and them alone.
Smiling gentlemen who speak a foreign language are pleasant company, but they probably don’t care about you or your blog.
